Vilma Saarela
Portrait and Event Photographer
My journey into photography started back in 2010 when my sister handed me her old Canon 550D with a small and lightweight kit-lens. From a fun hobby it became a serious side business during my studies at Turku from where I graduated as a photographer and graphic designer in 2016. My first ever wedding gig was my sister’s wedding and from there the inspiration grew. Looking back I was extremely green and lacked experience in documenting an event like that, but I really enjoyed it and from there on I spent countless of hours studying other wedding photographers and how they captured the day so magically.
From there I started taking on photography jobs from real estate to family and pet portraits and everything in between. Each assignment comes with its own unique requirements and different clients, which I enjoy massively. To this day I’ve been blessed to have been able to meet so many amazing people thanks to photography and have been able to grown as an artist after every encounter. My style to shoot is to tailor the experience to each client individually, and I’m proud of the feedback I’ve been getting thanks to that. It makes me immensely happy to hear the happy feedback after every gallery delivery.

About Me
My story began in 1993, in Lohja, Finland. I’m the youngest of three siblings, with arguably the most artistic spirit of us all in terms of making a career out of it. After spending years abroad I have now settled into a very wooded area somewhere in Espoo, Finland. Over here my small house hosts me and my nearly three-year-old retro pug Loki. Our home is right by nature, so we get to enjoy all that it has to offer right on our doorstep. This is of course extremely inspiring for someone like me who enjoys creating art! Alongside photography, I enjoy all kinds of art immensely, and currently, I’m also working as a 3D Artist in the gaming industry on the side.
My interest in photography in particular truly developed when in school we had our very first photography course back in 2013. Before that, I had played around with my old Canon 550D which I got from my sister, but during our lectures, I realised I actually had some decent talent for taking photos. Soon I bought my first mirrorless EOS 6D and the rest is history. My very first wedding photo gig was at my sister’s wedding, and the circle from the beginning of the hobby to the start of my professional career met.
From that first vocational qualification in 2016 I’ve since had the pleasure to work with dozens of amazing professionals and clients. My clients come from different backgrounds and different lives and it’s always such a privilege to be able to be part of their story for a little while as we work together to create something cool and memorable. It doesn’t matter if the photos or videos are for one private client or a bigger corporation, each time I find the encounter worthwhile. I continuously strive to grow as an artist and photographer, and each job I take gives me new tools to evolve and perfect my craft.
I would describe my style of shooting to be quite natural. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good studio photoshoot, but most of the time I do prefer being outside and within the natural light. I enjoy golden hour shoots with warm and hazy backlight from the sun that frames the subject beautifully. This is the reason I often ask my wedding couples for a second round of portraits later on in the evening when the sun is just about to set, to get those more relaxed and warm shots after most of the scary stuff from the morning is already behind. My go-to style is also friendliness. I get along well with people which helps a lot when coming along to shoot important days and family shoots, where it’s incredibly important to make the people in front of the camera feel safe and relaxed. The best compliments I’ve ever gotten are people telling me that they were super scared of the session, then only to realise that it was actually very fun and easy because of me!
These days I’m balancing my career between 3D art and photography, not willing to let go of either, as both compliment each other and fill my days with much joy. If you feel like I would be the perfect person to immortalise your story, don’t hesitate to contact me! I’d love to sit down and discuss how I can help to make the dream into reality.
Hope to meet you soon!
Yours truly, Vilma
